There is a trojan virus that has been surfing Android phones for a really long time and it has deployed a new method to steal users data by masking itself as the Uber app. It can even go as far as pulling pages from the app to not arouse suspicion.
The virus is called Fakeapp and according to Symantec, who discovered the virus mentions that it will fool you into typing your phone number and password to which it will send the details to a remote server where hackers can sell the information. It has the ability to load up the map page where you will enter your current location and destination which will actually hail a car to pick you up. It does this by deep linking to a URL in the official app which brings you to the Request Ride page.
Uber has spoken to Engadget about this matter and they mentioned that users would actually have to download an infected app in order for Fakeapp to take over the Uber app. They go on to mention that users should not download apps from unknown sources and only from the Play Store, in order to avoid this issue. Be wary of the apps you download as Android is a huge platform which is the perfect target for hackers to collect your information.
