NVIDIA has started rolling out updates for its original NVIDIA Shield Tablet (not the K1), calling it Shield Tablet Software Upgrade 4.0, which includes upgrading your Shield Tablet’s OS to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Notable updates according to NVIDIA’s official website include Marshmallow’s new feature Google Now on Tap, better management of app permissions, power consumption improvements and app optimization.
NVIDIA has also indicated the update to a new camera UI inspired by Material Design, also improving its burst photo functionality. The rollout also includes user interface upgrades, such as new wallpapers, the ability to customize and rearrange the toggles the Quick Settings menu and the ability to use Google Now voice commands from the lock screen.
The Marshmallow update also means that your Micro SD card can now be integrated with the tablet’s internal storage. However, NVIDIA has highlighted the importance of backing up your Micro SD card as there will be two ways to set it up after the upgrade. The first option, Portable Storage will not wipe the SD card’s data. The second option, Internal Storage, will wipe all data on the SD card, and thereafter integrate it with the internal storage.
This is the first major update by NVIDIA for its budget gaming tablet since the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update in July 2015. Don’t worry if you haven’t received your update as NVIDIA has just started rolling them out.
