MCMC blocks access to Medium

It seems that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has added another website into their blocked list as Medium is no longer accessible on some internet service providers.

According to Medium, the MCMC has e-mailed Medium last Wednesday , requesting that they remove an article posted by the Sarawak Report regarding the scandal involving Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Upon receiving the e-mail, Medium replied to the MCMC a day after, requesting for supporting documents that proves that the Sarawak Report has indeed posted an article that was blatantly untrue. MCMC did not respond to this e-mail.

On Friday, the 22nd of January, Medium received reports that users in Malaysia have been denied access to the website as some ISPs, such as Telekom Malaysia, has blocked users from accessing the site.

Medium has since stated that the website itself is in no position to evaluate the truth of the Sarawak Report’s post and has not received any evidence that the post violates any of the website’s rules or any laws. As such, they stand by investigative journalists who publish on their website until they receive an order from a court of competent jurisdiction.

As of the time of writing, I am still able to access Medium, which I suspect is due to the fact that I’m currently on Google DNS, so it appears that standard circumvention methods can be used to overcome MCMC’s attempt to block Medium.
