In 2013, Andy Rubin, co-founder of Android, left the division. In 2014, Andy Rubin left Google altogether. Now though, it seems that Rubin is aiming to get back into the smartphone market, by way of starting up his own company.

According to rumours floating around in the mobile industry, it seems that Rubin has been trying to recruit personnel to help establish a new smartphone company via Playground, Rubin’s own tech incubator. As of this point of writing, Playground has managed to raise USD 300 million for this venture.

It is uncertain as to whether or not Rubin would take a direct operating role in this new company, or he would primarily be a backer. The interesting point regarding this new smartphone company is the fact that this would just be one of many other hardware projects that Rubin has funded and worked on since he left Google almost 2 years ago.

There is speculation that the new smartphone that Rubin wants to make would be able to communicate with the various other hardware that he’s funded, making it a highly ambitious attempt should this speculation be true.
