You’ve seen it introduced in Taiwan, now you get your hands on AMD’s Polaris 10 tech as the company has officially released the RX 480 in Malaysia.
As was mentioned when it was first introduced, the RX 480 utilises the Polaris 10 architecture, optimised for 14nm FinFET process, giving the RX 480 significant improvements in both performance and efficiency when compared with its predecessors. The RX 480 excels at DirectX 12 and Vulkan as the Polaris architecture supports asynchronous compute, giving it an edge in games and VR applications that utilises these new APIs. For virtual reality, AMD states that the RX 480 will utilises LiquidVR technology to provide a smoother, more comfortable VR experience, while retaining the RX 480’s low cost barrier to entry.
Features such as HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.3 HBR3, and DisplayPort 1.4 HDR will also be featured on the RX 480, giving it the ability to support the new generation of high-resolution HDR and high-refresh displays enabling experiences such as FreeSync with high-refresh 4K, high refresh UltraWide, and single-cable 5K resolution computing at 60Hz.
The event also showcased some of the add-in boards (AIB) that the RX 480 will be receiving. These incudes the Sapphire Nitro version, the ASUS Strix version, the PowerColor version, the XFX version and the HIS version. While no solid release dates were given as to when the AIBs will be available for purchases, rumours online are saying that all of these cards will be available in mid-August.
Finally, AMD has also taken the time to introduce to us the RX 470 and the RX 460. The RX 470 is a graphics card that utilises the RX 480’s Polaris 10 architecture. This particular graphics card is made for 1080p gaming. Meanwhile, the RX 460 utilises the Polaris 11 architecture and is made for eSports purposes. Both cards will be available later this year.
