Grab Malaysia has launched Kid-Friendly Rides (Beta), a new ride-hailing option aimed at families travelling with children aged four to 12. The service equips selected vehicles with one dedicated booster seat and is initially available for advance-booked journeys to or from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The beta launches with support from Malaysian child-seat brand Koopers and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). Grab says participating driver-partners have been trained to handle the child seats, while the service follows MIROS guidance on choosing and using an appropriate restraint.
Available first for KLIA advance bookings
For now, Kid-Friendly Rides can only be selected through Advance Booking for airport trips involving KLIA Terminal 1 or KLIA Terminal 2. In the Grab app, users tap Car, open the Advance Booking tile and schedule their preferred pickup time. After entering an eligible airport pickup or destination, the option appears under Standard 6-Seater or Grab EV Exec.

A Standard 6-Seater booking includes one booster seat for an additional RM10. Grab EV Exec rides instead come with a Koopers Boost Fix booster seat as a complimentary value-added feature. The service is intended for children aged four to 12, though families should still make sure the restraint is suitable for the child’s size and is installed correctly.
The restricted airport rollout makes sense for the beta: advance bookings give Grab time to match families with its limited pool of equipped vehicles. It also targets the sort of journey where carrying a bulky child seat through an airport is particularly inconvenient.
Wider Malaysian rollout planned
Grab plans to expand Kid-Friendly Rides progressively across the wider Klang Valley before bringing the service to Penang and Johor Bahru. The company has not announced firm dates for those phases, and the initial fleet remains limited.
Child restraint systems have been required in Malaysia since 1 January 2020, but adoption continues to be uneven. Grab cited research indicating that belt-positioning booster seats can reduce injury risk by 45% for children aged four to eight compared with seat belts alone. MIROS director-general Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah Ishak said the initiative should make child restraints more accessible to families using ride-hailing services while encouraging correct use on every journey.
Kid-Friendly Rides joins Grab’s other safety-focused features in Malaysia, including AudioProtect and Women-Only Rides (Beta). For families heading to or from KLIA, the important detail is that the new option must be booked in advance rather than requested as an immediate ride.
