GV Ride, the e-hailing facilitation platform under Grid Vision Group, has announced a major step forward in Malaysia’s electrified mobility push with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) taxis nationwide by the second half of 2026. The initiative is led by its sister company, GV Car Import Sdn Bhd, which will oversee vehicle procurement and supply, signalling a large-scale transformation of the country’s taxi and e-hailing landscape.
A Multi-Partner Ecosystem to Drive EV Adoption
The MoU brings together multiple industry players, including EV Auto Works Sdn Bhd, Voltgem Energies Sdn Bhd and Alirantek (M) Sdn Bhd. Each partner contributes expertise across vehicle supply, EV technology development and financial infrastructure, forming a unified ecosystem aimed at accelerating EV adoption in commercial transport.
GV Ride will act as the core platform to facilitate deployment, connecting the EV fleet to taxi operators and e-hailing drivers across Malaysia.
Battery-Swap Technology Tackles EV Downtime
A key highlight of the initiative is the introduction of a proprietary battery-swapping system developed by Voltgem Energies. Unlike conventional EV charging, the system enables a full battery swap in approximately five minutes at dedicated stations operating 24 hours a day.
This effectively eliminates one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in the taxi and e-hailing sector — charging downtime. For drivers, the experience mirrors a traditional fuel stop, allowing them to return to the road almost immediately and maximise daily earnings.
The ecosystem will also include integrated telematics and fleet management systems, alongside plans to transition from fully imported (CBU) vehicles to locally assembled (CKD) units, supporting Malaysia’s EV supply chain and technology transfer ambitions.
Driver-Centric Model Lowers Entry Barriers
Beyond infrastructure, GV Ride is introducing a comprehensive driver support model aimed at making EV adoption more accessible. The programme offers vehicle rentals starting from RM80 per day, inclusive of maintenance, insurance and wear-and-tear components.
Drivers will also benefit from one year of free battery-swapping usage, flexible working arrangements including up to five days of monthly leave, and a structured onboarding programme as part of a broader industry transformation effort.
This approach removes the financial burden of vehicle ownership, allowing drivers to focus on earning income without upfront capital commitments.
Industry Backing and National Impact
The initiative is supported by Gabungan Teksi Malaysia (GTSM), with its president highlighting the broader goal of revitalising Malaysia’s taxi industry and improving driver livelihoods.
Phase 1 of the rollout is targeted to begin around July 2026, with calls for regulatory support and streamlined permit processes to accelerate implementation.
Accelerating Malaysia’s EV Mobility Future
With the planned deployment of 3,000 EV taxis and the introduction of battery-swapping infrastructure, GV Ride’s initiative represents one of the most ambitious electrification efforts in Malaysia’s public transport sector to date.
By combining technology innovation, infrastructure development and a driver-first business model, the project aims to redefine how Malaysians experience taxi and e-hailing services — moving toward a more sustainable, efficient and future-ready mobility ecosystem.
