Spotify Tightens Family Plan Sharing With QR Checks — What Malaysia Users Need to Know

Spotify is strengthening the way it verifies Premium Family members, adding a QR-code check intended to confirm that everyone on the plan lives with the account manager.

The company confirmed the change during its latest investor call. Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström described it as a continuing improvement to the service’s verification methods rather than a one-off crackdown, but the practical result is the same: people sharing a Family plan across different homes may find it harder to remain on the subscription.

Spotify has not announced a specific Malaysian rollout date for the QR check. However, the existing household requirement already applies to Malaysia, so local subscribers should understand what the new verification process may ask them to do.

How the QR verification works

When selected for verification, a Family member may be asked to scan a QR code displayed on the plan manager’s device. Reports describing the rollout say the code refreshes frequently, which makes forwarding a static screenshot less useful.

Spotify’s Family products keep separate accounts while giving the plan manager additional controls.

Members who receive a verification prompt are reportedly given seven days to complete it. Spotify’s support information also states that Family members must live with the plan manager, enter the same home address and can only switch plans once every 12 months.

The company says household plans are meant for people living at the same address. The verification is therefore enforcing an existing condition rather than changing Premium Family into a newly restricted product.

What Premium Family costs in Malaysia

Spotify Premium Family currently costs RM27.90 per month in Malaysia and includes up to four separate Premium accounts for family members living under one roof. Each person keeps their own library, playlists and recommendations.

Plan managers can buy up to two additional accounts after filling the four included places, with Spotify’s Malaysian support page listing each additional account at RM9.50. Older six-member plans created before 12 November 2024 remain unchanged according to the same support information.

The verification question is separate from how many places a plan includes. Whether a user has a current four-member plan or a legacy arrangement, Spotify’s terms still define the product around members of one household.

Why some genuine families may still be affected

The difficulty is that family relationships do not always fit a single address. A child studying away from home, a spouse working in another state or an older parent receiving help with an account may all be part of the same family while living elsewhere.

Under Spotify’s rule, eligibility is based on the household rather than the relationship. That distinction can feel unreasonable to affected users, but it is how the subscription is currently described in Malaysia.

What Malaysian users should do

If your household is eligible and receives a verification prompt, complete it within the stated window while the plan manager’s device is available. Check that every member has entered the same current home address and avoid repeatedly moving accounts between Family or Duo plans because Spotify limits plan switching.

Do not rely on workarounds circulating online. A method that appears to bypass one QR prompt could fail later, and it may leave a member unable to rejoin a suitable shared plan immediately.

Users living at another address should compare Premium Individual, Duo or Student pricing against the risk of losing Family access. In Malaysia, Premium Individual is RM17.50 per month, Duo is RM24.50 and Student is RM9.50, subject to eligibility and current offers.

For now, Malaysian users should not assume that every account will receive an immediate QR request. Spotify is applying the checks progressively, and the company has not published a country-by-country schedule. The direction is nevertheless clear: Premium Family sharing is being tied more closely to one physical household.
