At COMPUTEX 2026, Synology showcased its growing focus on enterprise solutions, highlighting new storage and backup technologies designed to help businesses manage increasing data demands while preparing for AI adoption.

Speaking with Jason Sin, Country Manager for Synology Malaysia, we learned that the company has been steadily expanding beyond traditional NAS solutions and is now placing significant emphasis on enterprise-grade storage and data protection.

From Enterprise Backup to Enterprise Storage

According to Jason, Synology’s enterprise journey began last year with the introduction of dedicated backup solutions targeting business customers. This year, the company is taking the next step by expanding its enterprise storage portfolio.

“We entered the enterprise market with backup solutions last year. This year, our major focus is on enterprise storage products,” Jason explained.

The move reflects growing demand from businesses seeking scalable, high-performance storage infrastructure to support modern workloads.

Building Storage for the AI Era

AI was naturally one of the key topics during the discussion.

Jason revealed that Synology’s newly introduced PAS7700 high-performance storage server has been designed with AI workloads in mind. The system delivers high IOPS performance and supports high-speed networking, making it suitable for AI training environments and data-intensive applications.

Beyond hardware, Synology is also working on AI integrations, enabling organizations to incorporate AI capabilities into their existing workflows while leveraging their Synology infrastructure.

“As AI adoption continues to grow, organizations need storage systems capable of handling large datasets efficiently. That’s where products like the PAS7700 come in,” Jason said.

Helping Businesses Manage Rising Storage Costs

With storage costs continuing to rise, businesses are looking for ways to maximize capacity without significantly increasing spending.

On the technology side, the company is introducing two key features designed to improve storage efficiency.

The first is data deduplication, which identifies duplicate files and stores only a single copy, significantly reducing overall storage consumption. This feature is available on the XS Series as well as selected SMB-focused models.

The second is data tiering, which automatically moves infrequently accessed “cold” data from SSD storage to more cost-effective HDD storage. This technology is supported on several Synology NAS models which can be found here, allowing businesses to optimize performance while controlling storage costs.

New Developments in Backup Solutions

Data protection remains another major pillar of Synology’s strategy.

Jason highlighted the introduction of the new DP5200 backup appliance, which offers a more compact form factor while retaining enterprise-grade backup capabilities.

Looking ahead, Synology plans to expand platform support in the third quarter of 2026. The company will add backup support for AWS EC2 instances, Microsoft Azure workloads, Google Workspace and Proxmox virtual machines, giving businesses greater flexibility in protecting hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Additionally, Synology is developing malware detection capabilities that will be integrated into its backup solutions, providing another layer of protection against cyber threats.

Malaysian Businesses Becoming More Backup-Aware

When asked about market trends in Malaysia, Jason noted that awareness around backup and disaster recovery has increased significantly over the past few years.

“Companies are much more aware of the importance of backup today compared to before,” he said.

Among enterprise customers, two technologies are attracting particular attention: immutable backup and air-gapped backup.

Synology is also promoting the widely recognized 3-2-1-1-0 backup strategy, which focuses on maintaining multiple copies of data across different storage mediums while ensuring recoverability and resilience against cyberattacks.

The Importance of Immutable Backup

Jason explained that immutable backups prevent backup data from being altered or deleted during a predefined protection period.

For example, if an organization sets a 30-day immutability window, no user—including administrators—can modify or delete the backup during that period.

This provides protection against ransomware attacks as well as accidental or malicious actions by internal personnel.

“Even if someone gains access to the system, they won’t be able to tamper with the backup during the protection period,” Jason noted.

Air-Gapped Backup Adds Another Layer of Security

Synology also continues to advocate for air-gapped backup strategies.

Under this approach, backup devices remain powered on only during scheduled backup windows. Once the backup process is completed, the systems are physically disconnected or powered down.

This significantly reduces exposure to cyber threats and is particularly useful for remote backup locations.

“The idea is simple. If the system isn’t connected, attackers can’t reach it,” Jason explained.

Strengthening Enterprise Readiness

As organizations increasingly embrace AI, cloud services, and digital transformation initiatives, the need for reliable storage and backup infrastructure continues to grow.

Through products such as the PAS7700 storage server, advanced data reduction technologies, and enhanced cyber resilience features, Synology is positioning itself as a comprehensive enterprise data management provider rather than just a NAS vendor.

With Malaysian businesses showing stronger awareness of backup best practices and cyber resilience, Synology appears well-positioned to support the next phase of enterprise digital transformation
