Sony has confirmed that the successor to the PlayStation 4 will be arriving “holiday 2020” which could mean by the end of the year, when Santa comes a-calling. The console will be called the PlayStation 5 – shocking, we know.
To be fair, there were talks previously of breaking the naming tradition at Sony, but it looks like they’re not fixing what isn’t broken. What is changing however, is the new controller design – Sony has said in a blog post that the new pads will now replace the old rumble tech with haptic vibrations. They say it’ll offer a wider range of feedback depending on the type of game you’re playing.
Also new will be “adaptive triggers” which will be incorporated into the L2 and R2 buttons – apparently these can be programmed by developers to output a tactile response to certain in-game actions like drawing a bow and accelerating a vehicle. What’s great is that this opens up a whole new avenue for game creators to get creative and surprise gamers with different sensations.
Meanwhile, the console itself is said to sport an SSD, an eight-core AMD Ryzen CPU, a Navi architecture-based GPU and 24GB of GDDR6 RAM with 4GB DDR4 memory dedicated to the OS. The systems can also support 8K gaming. These specs haven’t been set in stone just yet, the PlayStation 5 is shaping up to be quite an interesting machine.
