Xiaomi will not be present for Mobile World Congress 2017

Last year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) saw Xiaomi launch its Mi 5 flagship, having Hugo Barra grace the stage to introduce what seemed like the company’s best smartphone at that time. Things will be different this year, as Xiaomi has confirmed that it won’t be making an appearance at MWC 2017 Barcelona.

A Xiaomi spokesperson has spoke to the folks at Tech Crunch, stating that Xiaomi will skip MWC 2017 entirely. This news might turn out to be a double whammy for Xiaomi’s fans, after Vice President for International, Hugo Barra has announced his departure from the company over to Facebook to spearhead the latter company’s virtual reality efforts. Xiaomi’s absence at MWC 2017 will also mean that it will likely not be unveiling any handset during that period of time. So it’s best not to expect a Mi 6 anytime soon.

The Chinese manufacturer did not announce any new mobile device at the recent CES 2017 at Las Vegas either, only unveiling the new super slim Mi TV 4. Xiaomi however, showcased its whole range of devices and products at the tech convention, despite most of them not being available outside its homeland China. The company isn’t the only one who has confirmed not to launch its flagship at MWC this year. Samsung too has claimed that the Galaxy S8 will not see an MWC 2017 launch, but rather, at a later date.
