We witnessed the unveiling of Xiaomi’s most powerful smartphone the Mi 4 back in China a few weeks back, and now the device is finally here in our labs for us to get our dirty hands on it (of course, the device is still pretty much a virgin as of now). Let’s recap on the specs of the Mi 4, it has a Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, 3GB RAM, up to 64GB of built-in eMMC 5.0 flash with no storage expansion, 13 Megapixel AF Sony BSI main camera, 8 Megapixel Sony FSI front camera, 5” Full HD display manufactured by JDI, and a 3080mAh Sony Cell battery.

Our review unit here is the China Unicom WCDMA version which only supports TD-LTE in China, the Mi 4 international LTE version will be released after September. The phone also comes with WiFi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and an IR blaster, we are really surprised that the Mi 4 lacks NFC this time, very surprised. At this time of writing, the Mi 4 comes with MIUI v5 and Android 4.4.2 KitKat, MIUI v6 is scheduled to be released in a few weeks time which we should be able to feature it in our final review.

On first impressions, anybody will say that the Mi 4’s design is a total rip off from Apple’s iPhone 5s, which we won’t deny as the steel frame design resembles the iPhone a lot. In our own perspective point of view, we can only comment that the Mi 4 isn’t a total copy cat, but rather an inspired design from Apple, because the phone’s overall design is brought forward from the company’s recent Redmi Note, albeit more polished and handsome looking. Here’s a plus point though and many iPhone users will hate to admit it, the steel frame feels and looks so much precisely engineered and polished than the iPhone thanks to an advanced “edge coating” being applied to it.

Lastly, we’ll save the talk of some other features in our comparison videos and stories coming right up so stay calm while we work hard on them.
