New foldable phone patent filed by Samsung

Samsung, who has been busy making up losses for its Galaxy Note 7 disaster, is said to be working on a foldable smartphone yet again. This particular rumor has been raging on and off for a couple of years now, and as crazy as it sounds, the company has reportedly been spotted submitting a patent for a foldable phone again.

The Korean manufacturer turned out to be the trend setter for curved edge screen phones beggining with the Galaxy S Edge. Who would have thought that such a design would garner so much appeal leading to many other OEM’s (mainly Chinese companies) making phones with curved edge displays up to this year? Samsung seems keen on igniting another trend in its name again, with a foldable smartphone that has been rumored for years.

According to images of the reported patent by Dutch site Galaxy Club, the foldable handset appears to have a hinge at the halfway point, making it foldable into half, resembling the folding mechanism of a wallet. Note that when folded, both halves of the screen do not appear to have full contact upon each other. A foldable smartphone may still sound not too practical, but it might make sense as to being able to get a better grip of the phone, minimizing drops.

Who knows? Samsung might be gearing up for a concept phone launch in MWC next year like how Xiaomi released the bezel-less Mi MIX phablet late last month. Let us know your thoughts at the comments section below!
