Microsoft to cease production of the Surface 3 in December

With the Surface Pro 4 now out, it was only a matter of time until Microsoft decides to cease support for the Surface 3. While Microsoft hasn’t pulled the trigger on Surface 3 support just yet, the company has confirmed with ZDNet that the Surface 3 will no longer be in production by the end of December.

Discontinuation of the Suface 3 isn’t exactly surprising as the device has been in the market for a year and a half. That said, Microsoft has yet to introduce the successor to the device (i.e. Surface 4) and Microsoft has yet to mention anything about it either. According to ZDNet, one of their sources said that Microsoft has been undecided as to when they would introduce a Surface 3 successor.

Many are speculating that Microsoft would announce a Surface 4 at the same time as the reveal of Windows “Redstone 2”, but seeing as Microsoft won’t be touching on “Redstone 2” until early 2017, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll be hearing about the Surface 4 this year.

In the meantime, Microsoft has warned that stock for the Surface 3 will be limited once production of the device stops, which means that you may not get the model you want at your preferred store after December. So if you’re still on the fence on the Surface 3, you’re going to need to make a decision within the next few months.
