When it comes to smartphone processors, Qualcomm Snapdragon might be the more favorable one compared to MediaTek for major smartphone manufacturers, but the latter has been holding up very well against its main chipset rival. MediaTek has unveiled its new high end Helio X30 chipset, along with a couple of new P series processors.
First off, the MediaTek Helio X30 features a 10nm fabrication by TSMC. The processor retains its deca-core architecture, with upgrades in them in terms of clock speed. Each core has been clocked 2 GHz and above – four Cortex A35 cores at 2.0 GHz, four Cortex A53 cores at 2.3 GHz, plus the introduction of two new A73 cores, clocked at 2.8 GHz. The chipset is capable of supporting up to a whopping 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, eMMC 5.1 and a newer UFS 2.1 storage. The new Power VR 7XTP-MT4 graphics processor means that the Helio X30 supports 4K video encoding and decoding at 30 fps.
The mid range Helio P20 and P25 have also seen the light. Although not a lot has been revealed about them, we do know that they will be using a 16nm process, and both octa-core processors will be clocked higher as well, plus support of LPDDR4x RAM. The Helio P25 features dual-camera support with optical zoom, which means that we will be seeing a wave of mid range smartphones with dual-camera configurations some time in the future.
MediaTek is currently in fierce competition along with other processors, including Qualcomm, Exynos and Kirin chips. The latter two are homegrown processors, while Qualcomm and MediaTek chipsets can be found many other devices of different manufacturers. What do you think of MediaTek’s new processors?
