Two weeks from now, San Francisco will play host to the Intel Developer Conference. In what seems to be a teaser to the upcoming event, an Intel engineer has just leaked a photo of what seems to be a new VR sensor prototype online.
In a since-deleted tweet by senior prototyping engineer at Intel Dimitri Diakopulos, the picture reveals a depth-sensing prototype attachment for the HTC Vive. While the technical aspects of this attachment wasn’t revealed, the sensor’s general design looks similar to some of the designs that can be found on previous Intel RealSense developer kits. Diakopolos has mentioned to Upload VR that this device could track hand movement as well as IR-tracked controllers. The sensor can also scan the environment in real-time, opening up the possibility for it to detect obstacles automatically.
With Intel teasing such a device for the Intel Developer Conference, it’s highly possible that VR will be one of the focal points at the event. Here’s to hoping that Intel will demonstrate what it attempts to do in the VR space this year.
