The Indian market has a ton of potential when it comes to selling smartphones, considering its population and the diversity in consumers’ needs in the country. The spectrum is mainly dominated by entry level to mid range smartphones, allowing for Chinese smartphone manufacturers to thrive in the nation’s market. According to a report, Xiaomi has overtaken the likes of Apple and Samsung as the most preferred smartphone brand in India.

A recent survey conducted by Strategy Analytics show that 26 percent of Indian consumers prefer a Xiaomi handset to be their next smartphone, accounting for more than a fourth of the share. Both Apple and Samsung only account for 24 percent, with 12 percent each as the next preferred smartphone among Indian users. Apple and majority of Samsung handsets appear to be premiumly priced, which explains why Indian users prefer the more affordable Xiaomi phones.

Motorola takes third place with 7 percent of respondents voting for the brand, and 4th place is tied between Lenovo and OnePlus, with Lenovo slated to be out of the game since it will only be launching smartphones under Motorola in the future. Local Indian pride Micromax accounts for 2 percent, still being a favorable brand in its home land. The report suggests that Indian customers aren’t drawn by huge resolution screens and camera quality of smartphones, as a huge number of them are still in the transition of switching from a feature phone.
