Apple may be far ahead together with Samsung in terms on smartphone shipments on a global scale, but the Cupertino giant appears to be drifting away in one of the most major smartphone markets right now – China. Huawei continues to dominate the Chinese market, but beating OPPO just by a hair.

According to report by statistics site Canalys, Huawei has managed to hang on to its crown at first place on home soil China, based on Q2 2017 results. The manufacturer shipped out a little over 23 million smartphones during the quarter, while OPPO sits at second, with over 21 million. The selfie centric brand Vivo retains its third placing but has trailed further from the top two at 16 million smartphone shipments.

Apple appears to have been failing the Chinese consumer crowd in Q2 2017, dropping to 5th place behind Xiaomi who has overtaken the company, clinching 4th place. Xiaomi has managed to increase its sale of smartphone throughout the quarter, as Apple experienced decline, along with the likes of Samsung and Meizu with plunging shipments as well.

Apple will be expected to bounce back when it launches the iPhone 8, but will still face a challenge in China with local favorites constantly churning out new devices from time to time. Huawei will also be launching its other flagship later this year – the Huawei Mate 9.
