Google has finally caught up to Apple by finally launching Google Wallet in Malaysia, which you can finally store and make payments with your credit and debit cards on most Android phones with NFC capabilities, and all you need to do is to download the Google Wallet app from Google Play Store if your phone doesn’t come preinstalled with it.

At this time of writing, Google Wallet has worked with CIMB, Hong Leong Bank, Hong Leong Islamic Bank, Public Bank, HSBC and HSBC Amanah to provide the service. However, do note that not every banking cards are supported and here is a list of supported cards from respective banks:

  • CIMB (Mastercard Credit)
  • Hong Leong Bank (Visa Credit, Mastercard Debit)
  • Hong Leong Islamic (Mastercard Debit)
  • Public Bank (Visa Credit, Debit)

In addition, HSBC and HSBC Amanah credit card customers will only be able to enjoy the service in the coming months with Mastercard and Visa credit cards.

Therefore, only debit cards from Hong Leong Bank, Hong Leong Islamic and Public Bank are supported on Google Wallet, which is a lot more limiting compared to Samsung Pay and Apple Pay. Similar to its rivals, Google Wallet also allows you to store boarding passes and flight tickets.
