Google puts a stop to dessert names; Android Q is now Android 10

Google’s tradition of naming its Android version after desserts has come to an end; Android Q will lose its letter and instead be called Android 10.

Android Q’s first beta was first released in March while its final beta was released just recently, indicating that the official launch is near. There are many features that will be included in Android 10 such as the ability to undo app removal, share Wi-Fi networks with a QR code and live caption that will add subtitle to videos watched on your devices.

“This naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally, too. But we’ve heard feedback over the years that the names weren’t always understood by everyone in the global community,” said Sameer Samat, VP of Product Management, Android.

Google wants its names to be relevant globally, not just part of the world — hence the reason why they’re going with numbers instead of treats/desserts. In addition, Google also decided to introduced their new logo and brand colour that is “a more modern, accessible look”. The logo that was once green becomes black and it’ll now be paired with the famous Android robot.

The updated logo will be rolling out in the upcoming weeks and the Android 10 will be the beginning of Android’s new codename.
