It’s not every day a phone comes around with impressive photography performance at an affordable price – the HONOR 20 however, is such a device. Launched just two weeks ago, the brand’s newest flagship is slapped with a very reasonable RM1,699 price tag; we’ve gotten our hands on the phone and have promptly put its cameras to the test.

Now, what you’re going to get with the HONOR 20 is a holistic photography experience – with its quad-camera setup, the phone excels in several areas quite spritely, and boasts 4-in-1 capabilities – 48MP AI Ultra Clarity mode, wide angle lens, depth assist lens and macro lens. To show you how well it performs, we give you a breakdown below:

48MP Main Camera
The HONOR 20 is equipped with a Sony IMX586 sensor the latest and the greatest when it comes to smartphone photography; and part of the reason is that it’s made to snap at 48MP resolution.

Measuring at a size of 1/2-inches, the HONOR 20 is essentially equipped with a sensor that can efficiently absorb light, leading to fantastic daytime photography.

AIS Super Night Mode photo

With an aperture of f/1.8 one of the lowest in a smartphone the HONOR 20 performs exceptionally well in low-light situations as well. With AI Image Stabilization (AIS) Super Night Mode, night-time photography is a breeze, our snaps consistently produced sharp images with little to no noise.

You can further up the ante by switching to the 48MP AI Ultra Clarity mode. All you have to do is go to Settings, and select said mode.

The mode allows you to capture incredibly detailed photos that are so crisp, you can crop a photo without compromising on image quality. How? The 48MP AI Ultra Clarity mode utilises the HONOR 20’s Kirin 980 processor’s machine learning capabilities. We recommend using this in bright areas with stationary subjects as it requires a few seconds of holding the phone still for it to capture and combine multiple 48-mp frames to produce a photo of exceptional quality.

16MP Super Wide-Angle Camera

An underappreciated advancement in smartphone cameras is the super wide angle lens — the HONOR 20 packs a 16MP shooter that’s capable of covering up to 117-degrees field of view. It’s also supported by distortion correction to avoid subjects that come out warped out of shape. Very handy.

2MP Depth Assist Camera
We all want to be artsy; the quickest way to appear so bokeh effect. What’s more artsy than a portrait image with fancy blur in the background, right? The HONOR 20’s 2MP lens with f/2.4 gives you the ability to do this, without the exaggerated bokeh effect you may find on some smartphones today.

Portrait shot

Our test subject here is none other than our very own Yvonne notice that the background blur doesn’t eat up any part of Yvonne’s hair which is a prime area many bokeh lenses tend to do.

2MP Macro Camera
To complete an impressive set of camera lenses on the HONOR 20 is the 2MP macro lens that’s effective at a range of 4cm. Despite her small stature, using Yvonne as the subject here would probably be a bad idea, so we turn to the next smallest critter in the park ants! (there were flowers too, but we reckoned ant photography would be more thrilling)

Macro shot

They may be tiny, but they’re mighty fast and mighty painful should they get on your skin but we managed to snap a couple of macro pictures of these cuties and the results are fantastic. With the f/2.4 aperture, the lens does well to focus on the intended subject while keeping the background out of focus.

It’s safe to say that the HONOR 20 is more than capable of holding its own in the photography department but being a flagship, it needs to perform elsewhere too; and it does, with its Kirin 980 AI chipset couple that with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, you’ve got yourself a proper phone.

It’s not a big phone, so you get a decent 3,750mAh battery that supports up to 22.5W HONOR SuperCharge that HONOR claims can juice up your device up to 50 percent in just half an hour. For just RM1,699, the HONOR 20 is a steal.

The phone is available in Sapphire Blue and Midnight Black and will be available to purchase soon! Visit HONOR’s Facebook page here for updates. You can also visit here for more information on the HONOR 20.
