WhatsApp is making group calls easier with some changes on its latest update. Previously, users would have to wait for 1 minute and 1 second after starting a video call, and only by then, would they be able to add participants into the video call. There isn’t any option that offer users to initiate group calls at once, but now the app has been updated and users can now start group calls with just a couple of taps.

In the new updated version, you can initiate a group call simply by tapping into the group that you want to call, then tap on the phone icon at the top right corner of the screen, after that, when it loads into another screen, tap on the contacts within the group that you want to call and choose between the voice or video button. You could also initiate a group call from the new “Calls tab”, by just tapping onto the new Call icon on the top right corner of the screen, pick the contacts that you’d like to call via video or voice.

Currently, WhatsApp only supports voice and video calls up to four people at a time. Compared to other mobile messaging services such as Apple’s FaceTime that supports up to 32 people in one call or Messenger, which supports up to 50 people per call, WhatsApp seemed a bit limited. However, it is ideal for users who wants to communicate in smaller group and its also a useful way to connect with friends and family without having to tap into the cellular plan’s voice minutes. The calls are also end-to-end encrypted, which makes it a good option for privacy seekers.

According to WhatsApp, all members should have a good internet connection before using the group calling feature, as the quality of the call will depend on the contact with the weakest connection. The new update is now available for iOS users whereas Android users might need to wait a little longer as it will be rolling out “soon” on Android.
