A couple of days ago, Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has released a media invite heavily hinting at a Mi 5S launch on the 27th of September which is next Tuesday. As Xiaomi gears up for the event, a Chinese online retailer seems to have slashed the price of Xiaomi’s current flagship, the Mi 5.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is seeing its price cut from 1,799 CNY (RM1,119.80) to 1,599 CNY (RM995.30) on Lynx, a Chinese online retail store. This is probably a classic attempt to clear off the old before bringing in the new, though the rumored specs of the Mi 5S doesn’t seem to be worthy of upgrading from the current Mi 5. The Mi 5 in local Malaysian markets features a Snapdragon 820 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The Mi 5 in China however, is offered in two variants – 3GB of RAM with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. The upcoming Mi 5S is rumored to be powered by a slightly more powerful Snapdragon 821 chipset with 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM variants just like its predecessor.

Having said that, it might take a while for the Mi 5S to arrive at Malaysian shores, possibly a couple of months after its China launch. And that depends on Xiaomi’s master plan for its handsets as well. Do you happen to be a Xiaomi Mi 5 user?
