With Ransomware floating all around the Internet, Microsoft is taking out a new feature that will protect your folders from these attacks with a new controlled folder access feature set to release with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. The update is expected to release in September but testers can access a preview of the changes. The protection works by allowing specific apps to access, read and write the files, enabling this will prevent apps from accessing the desktop, pictures, movies and document folders.
The feature will monitor changes that apps make to the files in the protected folders and if an app attempts to make changes and is blacklisted by the feature, a prompt will appear notifying you which program is trying to make the change. With the recent WannaCry and the new Petya Ransomware affecting machines all around the world, the feature will prevent this attacks from locking you out of your folders and files. Microsoft is also adding an exploit protection to its Windows Defender software in Windows 10 which is the first line of defence from viruses and malware exploiting vulnerabilities.
If you are using the preview of the Falls Creators Update, then its best you enable this feature under the Windows Defender Security Center to keep yourself protected from any attacks.
