If there are two things Malaysians love besides food and gossip, they are shopping and driving – as a result, the two favourite Malaysian past times create horrendous traffic and parking inconveniences.
There’s not much we can do about the former (maybe take a train people?); but Sunway thinks they can somewhat solve the latter. Gone are the days of paper tickets and the fear of crumpling it in your sweaty jeans pocket.
During a media preview today, we were given a glimpse of Sunway Smart Parking – an integrated license parking recognition system that recognizes your car number plate and offers you multiple cashless methods to pay for parking. This system is available across several Sunway properties including Sunway Pyramid Mall, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Sunway Pyramid Hotel, The Pinnacle Sunway and more.
As to how it works, customers simply enter the parking bay as usual, without needing to grab a parking ticket. The scanner then detects your car number plate and opens the boom gate. In order to leave, you can pay online via a list of e-wallet apps like Touch ‘n Go eWallet, Boost, GrabPay and more; or do the same via the Sunway Pyramid app. If you’d rather pay at the autopay machine, you can do so with your credit card too. Upon exiting, the scanner detects your number plate again and opens the boom gate – if you’ve paid of course.
Currently, the feature is only available for Season Pass holders while the service will roll out to the public in Q1 2020. The traditional parking systems will be eradicated within a year after the mass implementation of Sunway Smart Parking. Currently however, the system isn’t 100% accurate yet, however Sunway said during the press conference that the accuracy rate of detection will reach the regions of the high-90s.
