GWM Malaysia has added a self-charging hybrid option to the WEY G9 luxury MPV range. The new WEY G9 Hi4 HEV is priced at RM249,800 on-the-road without insurance, placing it RM20,000 below the plug-in hybrid version while retaining the same seven-seat body and all-wheel-drive layout.
The difference is mainly how the two versions manage electrification. The existing PHEV can be charged externally and offers an electric-only driving range, while the HEV uses a much smaller battery and does not need to be plugged in. That makes the new model the more straightforward option for buyers who cannot charge at home.
358PS hybrid power without a charging cable
The Hi4 HEV combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid engine with front and rear electric motors, a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission and a 1.67kWh battery. GWM lists a combined output of 358PS and 782Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds.

GWM quotes fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100km and a combined driving range of up to 845km, both measured on the NEDC cycle. Those figures are manufacturer claims rather than independent Malaysian road-test results, and real-world consumption will vary with traffic, load and driving style.
Five drive modes are available, including Eco, Sport and AWD settings. The electronically controlled Hi4 system can vary how the engine and motors contribute, while the all-wheel-drive mode is intended to provide additional traction on wet or uneven surfaces.
A large cabin with a technology-heavy specification
The WEY G9 measures 5,050mm long, 1,985mm wide and 1,900mm tall, with a 2+2+3 seating layout. First- and second-row occupants get ventilation and massage functions, while the second row uses electrically adjustable “Zero Gravity” captain chairs with leg rests.
Cabin hardware includes a 14.6-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and a digital rear-view mirror. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 50W wireless charger and a 21-speaker audio system are also listed.
The driver-assistance package includes adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane centring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and braking, plus automated parking and a 360-degree camera with a transparent-chassis view. These remain assistance systems, so the driver is responsible for supervising the vehicle.
Warranty and introductory package
The HEV carries a six-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year or 180,000km warranty for the high-voltage battery, drive motor and motor control unit. GWM also includes five years of connected-vehicle telematics service.
For the launch, participating dealers are advertising financing rates from 0.08%, RM5,000 in trade-in support and a five-year maintenance package covering parts and labour. Buyers should confirm eligibility, participating banks and the final on-the-road price with a dealer before signing.
