Samsung has announced its smallest image sensor called the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 and it’s known to be the smallest image sensor on the market for now.
The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 offers high-resolution images despite having a small form factor. The image sensor measures at only 1/3.4-inches, yet it’s able to deliver 20MP resolution with its pixel size of 0.8μm. This is ideally made for the current trend whereby newer phone designs are bringing in punch-hole displays for a notch-less experience.
In addition, the image sensor is also using the ISOCELL Plus technology that allows more absorption of light information despite have tiny pixels. Paired with the Tetracell binning technology, the ISOCELL Slim 3T2 can combine four pixels into one for better results in low light condition, so the image sensor can increase its light sensitivity to resemble that of a 5MP unit with 1.6μm pixels.
The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 can also serve telephoto purposes where it adopts an RGB colour filter array instead of the aforementioned Tetracell technology. The 20MP ISOCELL 3T2 is also capable of rationing 60% higher effective resolution at 10x digital zoom compared to a 13MP sensor, in addition to the tele-camera module being reduced in height by around 7% when it’s compared to Samsung’s 1/3-inch 20MP image sensor.
The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is going to be in mass production this quarter itself, so we can expect it to make an appearance in quite a number of smartphones this year.
