The Note 7 isn’t the only thing that Samsung has announced at its Unpacked event as the company has also revealed a redesigned Gear VR.

Co-developed by Oculus, this new Gear VR is an improvement over the original in many ways. The first obvious improvement is in the field of view, as the new Gear VR now comes with an FOV of 101 degrees as opposed to the old headset’s 98 degrees.

A new addition that has been made to the new Gear VR is the USB Type C port, allowing it to support the Note 7 right from the get go. That said, the new Gear VR will still be able to support older micro USB-based Galaxy devices such as the S7 and S7 Edge, so you need not worry about backwards compatibility.

The new Gear VR will also receive a few physical changes. Besides the obvious colour scheme change, the new Gear VR has flattened out the touch-sensitive directional pad on the side of the headset. Also, Samsung has decided to add a dedicated button that brings you back to the Gear VR menu. This button is located right above the touchpad and next to the headset’s “back” button.

While Samsung Malaysia has not announced the price of the new Gear VR, other sources are reporting that the new Gear VR will have the same price point as the original headset. If this is true with Malaysia as well, the new Gear VR will probably have an asking price of around RM460. Like the Note 7, the new Gear VR will be available on the 19th of August.
