When the Sony’s new feature that allows PlayStation Network users to change theirs names was introduced, many were excited and welcomed the new change. However, Sony is warning that the initial update may cause game and app compatibility issues.
Beta testers of the new feature were warned that changing their online IDs might cause various issues, and some games and applications might not even support the new feature. While games published 1 April 2018 onwards will be compatible, games before that will require an amount of time before their compatibilities are confirmed. This could lead to loss of in-game currency, game data, Trophy progress and so on. Users might also still have their previous names displayed instead of the new ones.
Users are allowed to revert back to their initial online IDs free of charge if they faced the issues mentioned previously, though it might not be able to solve all the issues they faced, meaning they might not get back their lost data or Trophy progress. Once the new feature is launched in public, possibly in early 2019, PlayStation Network users will be able to change their names once for free and changes after that will require payment of $10 though there is a 50% discount for PlayStation Plus members.
That being said, it is advisable for PSN users to be more patient and wait for awhile longer before they try out the new feature. Better safe than sorry, right?
