The Playstation 4 console has hit a major milestone this week as Sony revealed that the console has sold more 40 million units since its release two and a half years ago.
Sony’s current console first hit the 40 million mark back in March 31st. In 2015 alone, Sony states that an estimated 17.7 million units were sold over the course of the year. Microsoft has yet to reveal the sales figure for their own console, the Xbox One, but judging by third-party statistics, the Xbox One has thus far manage to move 21 million units. If this statistic is true, it would mean that the Playstation 4 is currently outselling the Xbox One by roughly two to one.
While the Playstation 4 will likely continue to outsell the Xbox One for the foreseeable future, the sales numbers for 2016 will be particularly interesting. Rumour has it that Nintendo will be launching the NX during the end of the year, so it remains to be seen if Nintendo’s latest console could upsurp Sony on the console market much like how the Wii did with both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. With Sony planning to release both the Playstation Neo and the PSVR later this year, it’ll be interesting to see both Nintendo and Sony going head to head in the console space.
