Opera's web sync service was hacked

All Opera users who rely on the browser’s Opera Sync service should change their passwords ASAP as Opera has announced that hackers have managed to gain access to the service last week.

While Opera is currently investigating the hack, the company has reason to believe that the attack may have compromised user data such as passwords and login names. As such, Opera has resetted all sync account passwords. Furthermore, Opera has stated that any users affected by this attack should probably change any third-party passwords that were linked to Opera Sync. “Although we only store encrypted or hashed and salted passwords in this system, we have reset all the Opera sync account passwords as a precaution,” says the company in a blogpost.

That being said, this attack only affects those who utilise Opera Sync. If you’re an Opera browser user, but you’ve never relied on Sync, this attack is unlikely to affect you. If you’re one of the 1.7 million users that actively use Opera Sync though, you may want to change your passwords soon.
