New Oculus Rift update brings roomscale VR to the headset

Room-scale VR has thus far been a HTC Vive thing. However, that may no longer be the case as a recent update to the Oculus Rift has given it the capability to do room-scale VR as well.

With the new update, the Rift’s Oculus Home software is now able to support up to four tracking sensors. For room-scale VR, you’ll need only two sensors to do so, but with four, this would provide a more accurate experience when dabbling in room-scale VR. The developers have also said that with this update, the Rift can now play room-scale SteamVR games, assuming that you have more than one sensor of course.

That said, while the update does allow the Rift to do room-scale VR, you can’t actually use said functionality yet as Oculus is currently not selling the sensors by itself. Oculus did not give a timeline as to when you can buy additional sensors, but we’re hazarding a guess that it’ll be available once, or shortly after, the Oculus Touch controllers are released.
