Messenger is slowing becoming a gaming platform

Facebook is back yet again with an update to the Messenger app. Previously we have seen that Facebook has implemented chatbots, payments and now games. The company just announced that they want to extend the reach of Instant Games to more users around the world which they announced at F8 recently. This is not new as games were previously implemented into Messenger over the years.

This would mean that we should expect to see turn-based games, leaderboards, tournaments and depending on the game, a game bot will pop up to either cheer you on or notify you about options. Some of the first games that were made available on the app were Zynga’s Words With friends which are turn-by-turn embeds and Blackstrom’s EverWing which uses a game bot.

This is just two of the 50 games that Facebook is planning to add to the app, comparing to the 17 games that were unveiled a few months back. With all these new features coming to Messenger in a short period of time, one might ask, what direction is Facebook taking with their instant messaging app and would every user utilize all the functions that are available on the app, or perhaps more users will move over to Messenger Lite which does not include all these additional features.
