Meet the ZTE Quartz smartwatch

After a rumor or two from last month in February, it is now safe to say that the ZTE Quartz smartwatch is a real thing. Rumors previously suggested that the smart wearable by ZTE will be operating Android Wear, and it turns out that they were spot on. Thanks to the folks at Android Police, we now roughly know how the ZTE Quartz looks like, at least in images, for now.

It turns out that the ZTE Quartz isn’t actually attractive to begin with. The first turn off to most people might be the tick marks on the bezel, which makes it stick out like a sore thumb. The lack of subtlety carries on when you look at its form factor – pretty chunky even when you compare it to the likes of the LG Watch which was launched earlier this year. The charging cradle that comes with the ZTE Quartz isn’t wireless as well, sporting a 4-pin connector like you’d see on some smartwatches of today.

Further images show that the ZTE Quartz runs on the new Android Wear 2.0 on top of Android Nougat 7.1.1, but surprisingly, the smartwatch does not feature a rotating crown on its side for navigation. Earlier document leaks suggest that the Quartz lacks a heart rate sensor, NFC and 4G LTE capabilites, which puts a stopper to its future proofing possibilities.

Pricing and availability of the ZTE Quartz have not been made known just yet, but we do expect it to be a budget Android Wear smartwatch. After all, what’s a new Android Wear smartwatch without Android Pay?
