Mass layoffs for EA in the cards during tough economic climate

Electronic Arts (EA) are as big as they come in the gaming industry – they’re several developing teams strong and are publishers of countless iconic titles. Even though they’re the world’s second largest video game company, EA has apparently been struggling financially – just like the folks over at Tell Tale Games and Activision Blizzard.

And just like the later two brands, EA has announced that they will be carrying out mass layoffs too. Polygon reports that the company will be offloading 350 personnel, which is about 4% of their 9,000-man team.

This comes after compiling setbacks in the poor receptions of their major titles like Anthem, Battlefield V and Star Wars Battlefront II. There’s of course the exception of the free-to-play battle royale Apex Legends, but EA would need more than loot box money to keep afloat it seems.

Reports say that no personnel from the development teams will be affected by the layoffs but rather those working in the marketing, publishing and operation departments would be face the axe.

While Apex Legends are hot prospect at the moment, EA could very well rely on upcoming adventure game Sea of Solitude to shore up sales.
