Kodak launches its own smartphone with 21MP camera

Kodak is definitely a familiar name when it comes to photography. The company has recently revived itself out of bankruptcy and is now ready to take on the world again. This time, Kodak is testing out the smartphone market, and with that it has launched an Android smartphone named Ektra.

Of course, a Kodak smartphone wouldn’t be a Kodak smartphone without its focus on the camera optics department. The Ektra’s rear camera is a 21MP PDAF sensor with OIS and an aperture of f/2.0. The camera app features a DSLR like design, with presets such as Auto, HDR, Panorama, Sports and Macro, just to name a few. These presets are on a DSLR-esque dial on the screen of the camera app and happens to have haptic feedback when you turn the virtual dial. Manual mode gives users more liberty to tweak the camera settings such as ISO and shutter speed. Coupled with the rear camera is a 13MP selfie camera on the front, completing the banging camera package. The Ektra also has a dedicated camera shutter button for taking pictures.

The rest of the Ektra’s specs include a 5-inch Full HD screen with Gorilla Glass protection, a MediaTek Helio X20 processor underneath the hood with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage via the micro SD card slot. The Ektra sports a 3,000mAh battery, a USB Type-C port and will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

The Ektra’s design is very much like that of a camera. To finish up the camera look, Kodak has a range of real leather cases for the Ektra, making them look like vintage camera bags. The Ektra will be available in Europe this December for $550 (RM2,299.36). What are your thoughts on Kodak’s attempt on a smartphone?

Hello I hjust get my note and used it for a few days. But it seems that my 3g/hspa+ is too slow compared when I am using galaxy s3 I can get about 8Mbps on galaxy s3 but the note barely get 3Mbps.

Hi guys, this review is quite true, sadly. I am facing the same problem, especialy 'the lag'. One more thing, do you realize that in idle condition, redmi note use around 1GB memory, leave only 1GB available. Is it true and normal??

Guys, you need to put everything in perspective.. it costs like $150, OneplusOne costs twice as much. Samsung Note 3 costs 3 times as much.... You don't get something for nothing in life. For those who don't believe in paying top dollars for a smartphone that does everything they need, Xiaomi may well fit the bill. That 2 day battery life is a god send for those who value battery life than extra fraction of second saved playing latest games. I have a G3 and the Xiaomi note. Both have their strengths. G3 is an exquisite phone, does everything top notch... BUT it has short battery life. When I'm traveling abroad, I take my Xiamoi note with me due to its dual sim so I don't need to carry 2 phones when I'm using local sim AND my original sim. Xiaomi may not boast the top of line hardware, but many people do NOT need top of the line hardware to get by. 2G of internal memory, expandable memory, 8 core running at 1.7 ghz, is much more than adequate for majority of my uses. It is certain better than some of the crap 1.2 quadcore variants that the top makers are throwing out in the cheap end, usually costing twice as much as Xiaomi Note.

This is a good phone. I have been using it for 2 months. Everything are good and the price is just right. I would commend a few little things on the phone. first, the email do not take exchange account and its calendar do not sync with other email client. second, its camera screen is stuck from time to time due to cpu slowness. Other than these , it is a great phone at this price point. i am excited a phone is so affordable now. I also tried a Elephone G7, it broke after two days of use. such a crappy product. Stay away from Elephone.
