Huawei and Leica’s collaboration on the P9’s camera may just be the first step in what appears to be a fruitful partnership as both companies have announced that they will be expanding their strategic collaboration with the establishment of a jointly operated research and innovation center.

Located at Wetzlar, Germany, the ‘Max Berek Innovation Lab’ will see both Huawei and Leica “drive further development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve imaging quality in a wide range of photographic and mobile device applications.” While it is still too early to know what exactly will come out of this R&D center, both Huawei and Leica are looking at creating computational imaging, augmented reality and virtual reality solutions.

“Huawei and Leica share not only enormous innovation power and years of research experience, but also their dedication to providing the highest quality standards. The Max Berek Innovation Lab offers us a historic opportunity to unite the resources and extensive expertise of both companies to pioneer game-changing technologies,” says Markus Limberge, Chief Operating Officer of Leica Camera AG and Director of the Max Berek Innovation Lab.
