The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max has made a trackside appearance at Sepang International Circuit, giving Malaysians an early look at the flagship’s camera ambitions. In a release dated 5 October, HONOR said the phone was used alongside professional photographers to capture motorsport action, following its China launch on 28 September.
The focus here is on photographing subjects that rarely stay still. Between cars approaching from a distance and brief opportunities to frame a shot, motorsport puts zoom, focus and capture timing under pressure. HONOR is using the appearance to highlight the Magic9 Pro Max’s telephoto and high-speed photography capabilities.
Dual 200MP cameras lead the imaging upgrade
The Magic9 Pro Max pairs a 200MP main camera with a 200MP telephoto camera, alongside a 50MP ultrawide. HONOR’s official China launch announcement confirms optical image stabilisation on both 200MP cameras and an imaging workflow developed with cinema camera specialist ARRI.
For anyone who regularly shoots from the grandstand, a telephoto camera can help frame a distant car more tightly. Keeping a moving subject sharp, however, also depends on shutter speed, autofocus and shooting conditions. The Sepang appearance is a showcase of HONOR’s imaging technology; it does not establish that the phone can replace professional motorsport equipment.

ARRI collaboration also extends to video
Beyond still photography, the partnership brings ARRI LogC3, 10-bit colour and ARRI Wide Gamut 3 to the phone’s cinema workflow. ARRI Cinema Mode supports recording at up to 4K 60fps, while preset ARRI Looks give creators different colour treatments.
These tools will be more relevant to users who want greater control over filming and colour grading than those simply recording a quick clip. The announcement follows HONOR’s earlier Magic9 Pro Max filmmaking showcase for the Dear You epilogue, which also highlighted the ARRI collaboration.
Malaysian pricing and launch date remain unannounced
Despite the local appearance, HONOR has not announced Malaysian pricing, a launch date or retail availability for the Magic9 Pro Max in this release. The Sepang showcase should therefore be treated as an early preview rather than confirmation that the phone is already on sale here.
For Malaysian buyers considering their next camera-focused flagship, the dual 200MP setup makes the Magic9 Pro Max one to watch. Local pricing and hands-on testing will be needed before judging how well its imaging promises translate into an everyday phone.
