‘Twas only yesterday that we wrote about the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha – a new dual screen device that has a display that curves around the device. It was only rumours, but Xiaomi has put them to bed by officially announcing the device today during a product launch event in China.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is what Xiaomi says a phone that has a screen-to-body ratio of 180.6% – let that sink in. It’s not surprising, when you see how the phone looks like – one of side edge of the phone is completely made of glass, since it’s part of the display. During the demo at the launch, we see that battery life alongside other icons are displayed using that edge display.

The front display will sport little to no bezels – Xiaomi calls it the 360-degree surround display, which is our rough translation of what Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said. The display wraps around to the back and we’re not quire sure what the measurements are for the back display, but it’s used primarily for displaying widgets or the Android news panel as well as take selfies with.

Speaking of selfies, there will be no selfie camera – like the Huawei Mate X, you snap a selfie using the main lenses but with the back display as reference. Xiaomi ups the ante here as well by introducing a 108MP main lens as part of the triple camera setup. It is capable of shooting 12,032×9,024 resolution pictures. It’s couple with a 20MP wide angle lens as well as a 12MP portrait lens. Simply outstandingly ridiculous.

Under the hood, the Mi Mix Alpha will sport a Snapdragon 855+ as well as 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage – something we’ll be seeing in the ASUS ROG Phone 2. It has a 4,050mAh battery that supports up to 40W fast charging. The more important point here is that it will support 5G connectivity since we’re slowly pivoting to that era now.

With all that said, Lei Jun has made it clear that this is a concept phone that isn’t actually supposed to be available for the masses; however, with a price tag of RMB19,999 (RM11,764) the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha can be bought by, well, those who have the money. As cool as the phone is, for that kind of money, you can get a foldable phone, that at least has the added party trick of folding.
