Smartphone manufacturers developing their own processors aren’t exactly unheard seeing as Huawei and Samsung has already done so via the Kirin and Exynos respectively. Now, Xiaomi will be joining the fray as the Chinese device manufacturer is looking to develop its own processors.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal reveals that Xiaomi is looking to develop its “Pinecone” processor that is expected to be released “within the month”. Assuming that Xiaomi manages to hit the release timeframe, it could potentially mean that the Mi 6 could come with Xiaomi’s own processor.
Xiaomi’s entry into the processor market apparently started back in 2014 as the Xiaomi-owned private entity, Beijing Pinecone Electronics, acquired mobile processor technology from Datang Telecom subsidiary Leadcore Technology Ltd for 103 million yuan. It’ll be curious to see if Xiaomi’s Pinecone processor could manage to break into the processor market, but if it manages to do so, future Xiaomi phones may no longer come with Snapdragon or MediaTek processors.
