U Mobile customers rejoice as the orange telco has become the first in Malaysia to offer Wi-Fi Calling services to its customers.

Starting from today, U Mobile customers, both prepaid and postpaid, are able to make calls to any number so long as they’re connected to Wi-Fi. Even if the location that they are currently at has poor network coverage, so long as they are connected via Wi-Fi, they will be able to make calls.

Unlike the Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp, Wi-Fi calling is capable of providing a similar experience to normal mobile phone calls as Wi-Fi calls are made and received using existing mobile numbers. IDD calls and calls to landlines are also supported with Wi-Fi calling.

For now, this service is limited to iPhone 5C, 5S, SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus models. U Mobile has ensured that Wi-Fi Calling will be brought over the Android phones at a later date.

“We believe Wi-Fi Calling will be of great benefit as our customers no longer have to worry about not being able to make or receive calls, eve in areas where network coverage may be weak like in basements as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection. The best part is the U Mobile Wi-Fi Calling experience is incredibly seamless,” says Jasmine Lee, Chief Marketing Officer for U Mobile.
