It seems that Twitter is no longer taking online harassment on its platform lightly as the company has just recently updated their service terms in order to further combat malicious trolls.

The Abusive Behaviour section of Twitter’s support page has received an update, bringing with it a clearer definition as to what they consider to be harassment. New to the section is hateful conduct which Twitter defines as “promoting violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease”.

Should Twitter receive reports about a user committing such actions, the user’s account may be temporarily locked and may even be permanently suspended.

Twitter has also found that implementing mandatory actions for suspected abusive behavior is an effective method of combating online abuse. These mandatory actions include an e-mail and phone verfication system as well as a forcing the user to delete Tweets that violates the terms of service.
