The Huawei Mate 9 definitely sounds like one of the more impressive phones of the year by the increasingly competitive Chinese manufacturer Huawei. It features Huawei’s latest flagship HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor underneath the hood. The Kirin 960 chipset was launched not too long ago before the launch of the Mate 9. The processor was compared with various processors, especially flagship ones such as the Snapdragon 821 processor, the same one seen underneath the hood of the Google Pixel and the newly launched OnePlus 3T. But it turns out that the Kirin 960 did not perform as well as expected on the Antutu Benchmark.
According to a report by GizmoChina, the Mate 9 managed to get a score of 132,289 points, which apparently pales in comparison when you factor in Snapdragon chips. The 132,000 points is a result that is said to be achievable by the older Snapdragon 820 processor. The Snapdragon 821 processor on the other hand usually scores significantly higher than the Kirin 960, said to be around the 160,000 mark, depending on the devices.
Huawei advertised the Kirin 960 processor by comparing it to the likes of the Snapdragon 820 or 821, and Apple’s own A10 chip. According to some results by Huawei during the launch of the Kirin 960, the chipset is said to be more impressive when compared to the rest of the competition like the Exynos 8890, the Apple A10 processor and the Snapdragon 821. Having said that, one area where the Kirin 960 appears to perform less impressive than the others, in terms of its GPU. Admittedly, Mali GPU’s won’t beat Adreno ones by chipmaking company Qualcomm.
This benchmark result, though only a benchmark, might seem surprising especially those who plan to purchase a Mate 9 or is a big fan of Huawei’s own CPU’s. Huawei’s upcoming P10 handset is rumored to sport a Snapdragon 835 processor, instead of Huawei’s own homegrown chips. What do you think?
