The PlayStation 4 will get System Software Update 4.50 soon as the update has gone live for anyone who’s part of the beta program over the weekend. Codenamed ‘Sasuke’, the update brings with it two big features as well as a slew of other improvements.
With the 4.50 update, the PlayStation 4 will finally get a feature that has been long-awaited by many: external hard disk support. Once the update goes live, PlayStation owners can opt to plug in a USB3.0 external hard disk to their PS4 to immediately add more space to their console. Any application that is installed on the external hard disk will appear on the Home Screen, so you need not worry about jumping through menus to access your applications. The feature is compatible with up hard disks up to 8TB in size.
The other main feature that will be coming with the 4.50 update is ‘Boost Mode’. Available exclusively to the PlayStation 4 Pro, Boost Mode is a setting that, once enabled, will allow games to draw on the extra power of the console so that it could run better. This feature will only affect games that did not receive a PS4 Pro-specific patch, and even then, not all games will receive a significant performance boost. Nevertheless, this mode will allow games to take advantage of the additional processing power that the PS4 Pro has to make it run smoother.
Other features and improvements that will be made with the 4.50 update includes custom wallpaper support, a retooled Quick Menu, a simplified notifications list, the ability to post on the PlayStation Network Activity Feed, and 3D Blu-Ray support for the PlayStation VR.
