The Alpha A7, a compact camera body with a full frame sensor

The Sony Alpha A7 is Sony’s first mirrorless camera that features a full frame image sensor in such a compact body. The body is slighly smaller than an entry level Alpha series camera but still larger than its NEX series. The Alpha A7 has a full frame image sensor that shoots pictures at 24.3 Megapixels and supports Sony’s E-mount and full frame lenses. The kit lens provided is a standard 28-70mm lens with an aperture range of f3.5-5.6.

We find a multi interface horse shoe that accepts external microphones and flash at the top of the body. We also find two dials that lets you switch shooting modes and adjust exposure, a two steps shutter button and a customizable button.

We have a 3-inch titltable display on the main panel that shows 921k dots. It also act as a digital live view and of course with the operational butoons next to it.

On the right, we find an NFC sensor that lets users to transfer pictures to smartphones via the Sony’s Playmemories app and they memory card slot. It also features a WiFi connection to connect to your smartphones or tablet.

The camera body also has a headphone jack, microphone jack, microHDMI port and a microUSB port on the left.

One thing that we would like to emphasize on is the noise management in poor lighting conditions at a very high ISO levels set. Well, we got a really awesome shot taken with the Sony Alpha A7. Look at the picture below, imagine you can shoot the stars by hand held the camera. This is the result:-

f/3.5, 1/3 sec. ISO-16000

f/3.5, 1/25 sec. ISO-10000

f/3.5, 1/40 sec. ISO-8000

This will speak for macro shot

f/5.6, 1/400 sec. ISO-80

Bottom line, we totally fell in love with the Alpha A7 not just only in image quality and camera performance but also the possibility of having a full frame camera at the size of our palm. The Sony Alpha A7 retails at a price of RM4999 for the camera body alone and RM5999 with the kit lens, it is probably the cheapest full frame camera that you can find in the market with a compact size. We give it a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. You can find more sample shots at the end of this post and a video review done by Warren which sums up all of the details of the Sony Alpha A7.
