Data transfer speeds in memory cards are finally seeing a breakthrough with Universal Flash Storage (UFS) cards, Samsung is the first manufacturer to have announced these new removable memory cards based on the JEDEC Universal Flash Storage 1.0 standard, storage capacities are available in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, it is designed for use with high resolution mobile shooting devices such as DSLRs, 3D VR cameras, action cameras and drones.

Samsung claims that the 256GB UFS card could achieve data transfer speeds of 530MB/s sequential read and 170MB/s sequential write, which is rather impressive considering the small size. For such trnasfer speeds, Samsung has claimed that the 256GB UFS card will be able to shoot 24 large/extra fine JPEG photographs continuously (1120MB equivalent) in less than 7 seconds with a high end DSLR camera. No release dates and pricing have been mentioned on the new UFS cards, however it is clear that this would be the future for removable storage on smartphones, current smartphones such as the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 have already adapted the UFS standard for internal storage, let’s hope that we will finally see UFS removable storage in smartphones next year.
