Last year, Apple announced that it will be releasing its own stylus called the Apple Pencil. Today, a patent has been made public, and this patent shows that Apple may have some interesting plans laid out for its stylus.
First filed back in 2014, patent 9,400,570 shows that Apple has been granted a patent for a stylus that comes with “force sensors” located on both ends of the devices. Said stylus also comes with an “inertial sensor,” allowing it to switch between several different modes. Said modes are the most interesting part, as the patent reveals that the stylus is able to not only interface with Mac trackpads, it can also be used as a joystick for gaming or music creation. Some of the examples given includes using the stylus as a “sword, wand or hammer” for video games, and as a “drum stick, xylophone mallet, a gong beater, a conductor’s baton, or other musical instruments” for musc creation.
While the patent doesn’t mean that the current Apple Pencil will be able to do all those and more in its current iteration, it is possible that future Apple Pencils may be advanced enough to do all that and more. Whatever the case, it is interesting to see what Apple intends to do with stylus other than being a alternative way to move a cursor around.
