Most of you have probably heard of Oxygen OS, the OnePlus home grown operating system that birthed from a controversial dispute between the company, Micromax and CyanogenMod. It’s safe to say the least, that Oxygen OS was well received as a replacement for the previous CyanogenMod, with its very close to stock Android software, with a couple of customization features on top. Hydrogen OS on the other hand, was developed by OnePlus tailored specifically for the Chinese market, looks very much different from Oxygen OS. For instance, the lack of an app drawer. However, according to XDA Developers, OnePlus has claimed that it will merge both Hydrogen OS and Oxygen OS in order to roll out faster updates.
XDA Developers have reported that both the teams behind Hydrogen OS and Oxygen OS will be working together to make the merger a success. Oxygen OS 3.5 is said to be the “backbone” for future efforts. That merger would mean that instead of distributing resources to two different software developments, OnePlus will be able to focus on just one. As a result, OnePlus will be able to roll out software updates more timely and in a quick manner, something which has been lacking over the past.
Despite the stark contrast between both Hydrogen OS and Oxygen OS, the merger will most probably lean towards a more dominant Oxygen OS front, though some may speculate that we will be seeing a less stock Android look in future updates as compared to the current builds of Oxygen OS. Nevertheless, the merger will hopefully help OnePlus push out updates quicker and more often. Given the fact that OnePlus devices have pretty active custom ROM communities respectively, and with the likes of an unofficial CyanogenMod 14 with Android Nougat already available for the OnePlus 3, the decision to merge Hydrogen OS and Oxygen OS might seem necessary.
OnePlus hasn’t announced on when we can expect a future software update as a result of the merger, but we hope to see more fruits and better fruits from this labor by the folks behind Hydrogen OS and Oxygen OS. What are your thoughts on this decision?
