OnePlus kicked off their VR launch of the OnePlus 3 with a 604MB sized app update. That’s right, the countdown timer hit zero and users were required to update the VR launch app. Regardless, the VR launch wasn’t great either, like an educational game for elementary school kids, requiring fans to explore around OnePlus’ “space office” with different groups of specs revealed in separate rooms. However, three “loops” can be collected throughout the underwhelming exploration in order to purchase the OnePlus 3 before the handset officially goes on sale on the official website.
Nevertheless, let’s get into the phone itself. OnePlus, oddly and smartly, did not label the OnePlus 3 as a “2017 Flagship Killer” this time. At first glance, you’ll notice the change in the phone’s design as compared to its predecessors, featuring a full body metal build with sand blasted aluminium in place of the sandstone backing of the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. OnePlus also boasts the handset’s slim form factor, standing at a mere 7.3mm, making it pretty slim as a flagship device.
The OnePlus 3 sports an AMOLED panel this time, known as Optic AMOLED, at the same size and resolution of 5.5 inches and 1080p respectively. The AMOLED screen should make colors pop better as compared to its predecessors. Underneath the hood are standard 2016 flagship specs – a Snapdragon 820 processor, an Adreno 530 GPU, the overkilling 6GB of RAM plus 64GB of internal memory. The OnePlus 3 is only offered in the sole 64GB storage option this time, instead of the rumored 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB variants.
Up next, the OnePlus 3 features a 16MP Sony IMX 298 sensor for its rear camera, equipped with EIS and OIS with f/2.0 aperture. The OnePlus 3’s camera app comes with auto-HDR by default plus a Dynamic De-noise feature for clearer and less grainy images. The phone’s selfie camera is a Sony IMX 179 sensor at 8MP, featuring Smile Capture, in which the camera snaps pictures automatically when it detects a smile.
The OnePlus 3 packs a 3,000mAh battery, which supports OnePlus’ new Dash Charge technology, rumored to be based on OPPO’s Super VOOC charging technology. OnePlus promises a day’s power in half an hour, whereby Dash Charge will juice the OnePlus 3 over 60% in 30 minutes. The company has also improved on the handset’s fingerprint sensor on the front panel, which now unlocks the phone in only 0.2 seconds.
The rest of the specs include the return of NFC which was absent in the OnePlus 2, plus dual-SIM support. The OnePlus 3 is running Android Marshmallow with the lightly skinned Oxygen OS on top. We’re hoping that OnePlus won’t have trouble rolling out future updates punctually. The handset is available in two color options – Graphite and Soft Gold and will be available for sale at $399 (RM1,638.27). As usual, flagship specs for a reasonable price, and this time, it’s invite-free as promised by the Chinese manufacturer. The OnePlus 3 is said to be “coming soon”, according to OnePlus Malaysia’s Facebook page, but a specific timeframe has yet to be confirmed. What do you think about the OnePlus 3 so far?
