Nintendo has launch the Nintendo Switch Online app, adding online features to the Switch

After months of waiting for news on playing online with friends on the Nintendo Switch, the iOS and Android app that is required to use any online functionality have finally been released. This app will finally allow you to have voice chats with your friends, send game invites and various other game information that will appear on the app.

Although there no game that currently utilises Internet connection, there is not much that can be done with the app until Splatoon 2 releases this week. The early launching of the app is probably to allow users to get used to the interface and functions the app provides. The service is currently free till the end of the year and will cost $19.99 yearly, a much cheaper alternative comparing to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Gold.

After checking both the Play Store and the App Store, it is displayed as not compatible with your devices, but reports indicate that it was meant to release along side Splatoon 2. It might not be ideal to have the online features separated from the actual console, but its good to finally see online functionality coming to the Switch, giving more reason to get the console.
